Picked up this XJ a couple years ago with the engine knocking with only 136,000 miles. pulled and tore it down, found #3 wrist pin loose. There was also and inch of gunk on the head, somebody didnt know how to change the oil. Took it to the machine shop and had it punched 20 over and the head cleaned and checked. I put it together and re installed it. Still have issues tho.

Holy sludge batman!

it ran like that? Damn

So what kind of problems are you still having? How much did a set of pistons set you back? I would like to build mine some day. I would like to take the crank down 10-20 thousandths, at least 20 over pistons, head milled down 20 thousandths, oversized valves, new lifters and push rods, cam, port and polish the head, and have the intake manifold ported out.

Here is the best prices I have found for rebuild kits. http://www.perfectengine.com/Jeep_4_0L_242_CID_Master_Kit_p/eth-mkj242fp.htm

When I did mine I pulled the engine, tore it down then took it to the machine shop. I had them order the master rebuild kit (they matched the online price), clean and bore the block and clean and rebuild the head. All said and done that bill was just over $1500. I then put it all back together and installed it. I went 20 over.

When it fires it acts like your foot is holding it at full throttle, it spits and sputters then takes off. I shut it off when it hits 4,000 RPM's, I figure thats plenty high enough on a brand new engine! Need to get a scan tool on it and see if the TPS is stuck at 100%.

Update.........
Finally got it running 2 weeks ago, been driving it since. Runs great, I just keep getting the Crankshaft PS code. In the process of building a new front bumper from 2 3/8ths tubing.

1/4 inch plate with another piece bolted to the back of the factory cross piece with ears wrapped around the corners of the frame.
